Teaching Plan Comment
„Das Leben eines Exilanten“
The teaching idea deals with the topic "living in exile" and can be applied to many different school subjects.
Using a website for research tasks develops the students’ media competence and teaches them how to distinguish important information from unimportant one. Moreover, it focusses on the students’ reading and writing skills as it gives examples of how to write a biography.
Including the students’ real neighborhoods etc., the teaching idea makes clear connections between the students’ life and delivers authentic learning situations.

Unfortunately, the teaching idea does not provide any suggestions for an actual use in school; that is, it does not refer to a curriculum. But I liked the idea and searched for passages in the Hessian curriculum for English as a foreign language and tried to include the idea.
The teaching plan’s topic perfectly fits in the Q1 “The Challenge of Individualism” (p. 57) and can be integrated in lessons about immigration in the USA.

For this, I suggest that the students do research in order to find the biography of a family member who emigrated to the USA. The website of the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven provides information about the history of emigrating to the USA, research websites with passenger lists, a link to a website about Ellis Island, and a welcome video that creates the feelings the German emigrants had while leaving Germany.

Doing research about the own family members or family members of friends let the students to identify with emigrants and later immigrants and allow to understand their feelings and situation.
