This e-portfolio entry is based on an interview with a 13-year-old girl who lives in a rather rural region of Germany.
In terms of new media supply, her school is rather poorly equipped. Most of the time they use the so-called classical media devices like blackboards, overhead-projectors, television-sets and video-, CD- or DVD- player.
Internet- supported teaching is really rare in her school. This is most of the time not only because of the “Low-Tech Teachers”, but also because of the slow and poor Internet-supply in her region. Even in her leisure-time, she uses her mobile phone instead of the Internet to keep contact with her friends.
As future-teachers, we always have to bear in mind, that the technical progress in schools is not only dependent on personal will and financial ability but it is also dependent on political will and the development of infrastructure in a given region.

Interview
Interviewer: May I ask you a few questions about the media equipment in your school?
Student: Yes, of course.
I: What kinds of media do you use in your school?
S: We use overhead-projectors, overhead-projectors, television-sets and video-, CD- or DVD- player.
I: Do you use Smartboards?
S: I don’t know what you mean by this…
I: It’s a new kind of blackboard that includes several media devices.
S: Oh no, we don’t have things like that. But I have a Smartphone.
I: Do you use it in school?
S: Yes, sometimes, I use it to send messages to my friends in the neighboring classes.
I: And do you use it in class, like in order to work?
S: Oh no, we don’t use it for that.
I: Do you use computers or the Internet in class?
S: Sometimes, we use computers but they are very old and they don’t have Internet access. I don’t see the reason why we should use it. And by the way, using the Internet is very boring because it takes minutes to get to the next page.
I: What do you mean?
S: The Internet-supply is very bad. I think, the mayor promised to make it faster…
I: Okay, I see. If the Internet is so slow, do you send e-mails to your friends?
S: No, we only use our mobile phones. That’s easier.
I: Would you like to use more new media in school? Like Internet tools etc.?
S: Yes, I think it would be great, but only if the Internet is fast enough; otherwise, it would be so boring…
I: Thank you for the interview.
Student: Yes, of course.
